After an armed robbery, Jens (Frederick Lau), a young German, flees to a small village in Luxembourg. Claiming to be looking for seasonal work, he arrives just as the harvest season is coming to an end and initially fails to find a job.

One evening, he meets Lucy (Vicky Krieps), the mayor's daughter, in the local pub. She makes advances toward him, and they spend the night together. The next morning, Jens is offered a job.

As he settles into village life and gradually develops a deeper relationship with Lucy, his past threatens to catch up with him. But the villagers also appear to be hiding dark secrets that slowly come to light. And as Jens becomes more deeply integrated into the community, he begins to change himself.
